Privacy policy

Last updated:

This site is a static website. It has no user accounts, no comment forms and no newsletter. We collect as little data as we can.

Data we collect

Server logs. The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web server, Cloudflare records basic technical data about each request (IP address, browser type, the page requested, the time) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Access statistics. We use privacy-focused analytics that do not use cookies and do not identify individual visitors. We see how many people visit each page, which country they come from and which site referred them. We use this to decide which articles to improve.

Link clicks. When you click a booking or affiliate link, we may record that a link on that page was clicked. This does not include who you are.

Browser storage. If you switch the page background to dark, your choice is stored in your browser (local storage) so it is remembered next time. Nothing is sent to us.

Cookies

This site itself does not set cookies.

Third parties may set cookies:

  • Booking sites you click through to (for example Klook or KKday) may set an affiliate cookie so that a purchase can be attributed to this site. This is governed by their privacy policies.
  • Google Fonts. The English typeface is loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests the font from Google and Google sees your IP address. See Google’s privacy policy.
  • Travelpayouts. We take part in the Travelpayouts affiliate network, and every page loads a small script from Travelpayouts. We use it to confirm to Travelpayouts that we own this site; we do not use its features that insert or change links automatically. Travelpayouts states that the script does not collect personal data. See Travelpayouts’ privacy policy.

Email

If you email us, we keep your message and address for as long as needed to reply and to handle any follow-up. We do not share them with anyone else.

Your rights

Under Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information and, where applicable, the EU GDPR and similar laws, you can ask us what personal data we hold about you and ask us to correct or delete it. In practice, the only personal data we are likely to hold is an email you have sent us. Contact details are on the contact page.

Changes
